Canada Expels Six Indian Diplomats Over Hardeep Singh Nijjar's Killing; India Names Canadian Official in Terror Case
Oct 19, 2024, 04:18 AM
Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly has warned that India's remaining diplomats in the country are 'clearly on notice' following the expulsion of six Indian diplomats, including the High Commissioner and others from Toronto and Vancouver. The expulsions stem from allegations linking Indian agents and diplomats to the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Joly declared, 'We won't tolerate any diplomats that are in contravention of the Vienna Convention,' emphasizing that 'transnational repression cannot happen on Canadian soil' and adding, 'We have never seen that in our history.' She also urged Canadians to be 'aware of what Indian agents, including Indian diplomats, are doing on Canadian soil.' In response, India withdrew its High Commissioner before Canada's move and has named Canadian border police official Sandeep Singh Sidhu in a terror case, alleging his involvement in promoting terrorist activities in Punjab. The escalating tensions reflect deepening diplomatic rifts between the two nations.
