Massive Fire at BioLab in Georgia Forces Evacuations of 17,000 and I-20 Closure
Sep 29, 2024, 09:00 PM
A massive fire broke out at the BioLab chemical plant in Conyers, Georgia, early on Sunday morning, causing significant disruptions and safety concerns. The fire, which started around 5 a.m. due to a malfunctioning sprinkler head that reacted with water-reactive chemicals, reignited hours later after initial containment efforts. The incident has prompted evacuation orders for approximately 17,000 residents and a shelter-in-place directive for others in Rockdale County. The fire has led to the closure of Interstate 20 and other local roads as emergency services respond to the situation. The blaze has produced a large plume of toxic smoke, including chlorine, visible for miles, raising concerns about air quality and public health. BioLab, a manufacturer of pool and spa treatment products and part of KIK Consumer Products, has experienced similar incidents in the past, including in 2020 and 2004. Additionally, over 90,000 residents are sheltering in place due to the hazardous conditions.
