Azerbaijani government sources have confirmed to Euronews that the plane was struck by a Russian surface-to-air missile fired from a Pantsir-S air defense system near Grozny. The missile allegedly exploded mid-air, damaging the aircraft. The pilots were denied permission for an emergency landing in Russian airspace and were instructed to fly over the Caspian Sea.
