UN Security Council Approves AUSSOM Mission in Somalia, Excluding Ethiopia, Set to Begin January 1, 2025
Dec 27, 2024, 05:15 PM
The United Nations Security Council has approved the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which will succeed the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The mission is set to begin operations on January 1, 2025, with an initial deployment period of 12 months. The Council reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing stability and security in Somalia. France has expressed support for the establishment of AUSSOM, noting that it marks the first implementation of an African peace operation under resolution 2719. In a related development, Somalia has decided to exclude Ethiopia from the post-ATMIS security arrangement, a move that may heighten geopolitical tensions in the Horn of Africa. Uganda is expected to take over some responsibilities in this new arrangement.
