NHL Schedules First Outdoor Games in Florida: Panthers vs. Rangers on Jan. 2, Lightning vs. Bruins on Feb. 1
Jan 8, 2025, 08:06 PM
The National Hockey League (NHL) announced that Florida will host its first-ever outdoor games during the 2025-2026 season, marking a significant milestone for hockey in the state. The Florida Panthers will face the New York Rangers in the 2026 Winter Classic at loanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins, in Miami on January 2. The Tampa Bay Lightning will host the Boston Bruins in the Stadium Series game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on February 1, representing the Lightning's first time hosting an outdoor game. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman stated that these events are part of a month-long celebration of hockey in Florida. Panthers CEO Matt Caldwell expressed enthusiasm, saying, "Our time has come." Caroline O'Connor, president of business operations for the Marlins, also commented on the significance of the event. Due to Florida's warm climate, the NHL will employ unique measures to maintain ice conditions. For the Tampa game, the league plans to construct a temperature-controlled structure within Raymond James Stadium, combining elements of a tented structure and a warehouse. The rink installation is scheduled for two weeks prior to the event. Contingency plans are in place if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the NFC Championship game at the stadium. These outdoor games highlight the NHL's efforts to expand the sport's popularity in non-traditional markets. Fans are eagerly anticipating these landmark events that showcase the growing prominence of hockey in the region.
