1-Meter Asteroid 2024 RW1 Burns Up Over Luzon Island, Philippines, Creating Spectacular Fireball

A small asteroid, approximately 1 meter in diameter, entered Earth's atmosphere and burned up over the Philippines on September 4, creating a spectacular fireball. The asteroid, designated 2024 RW1 and also known as CAQTDL2, was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey just hours before impact. It entered the atmosphere near Luzon Island at around 16:40 UTC (12:40 pm EDT), traveling at a speed of 63,360 kilometers per hour (20.8 kilometers per second). Despite the nearby tropical storm Yagi/Enteng, the fireball was visible in several areas, including Ballesteros, Cagayan, and Tuguegarao City. This event marks only the ninth time an asteroid has been detected prior to impact. The European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA confirmed that the asteroid posed no threat and disintegrated harmlessly in the atmosphere.
