U.S., Israel, and U.K. Warn Tourists of Terror Threat in Sri Lanka's Arugam Bay; Police Tighten Security
Oct 23, 2024, 10:30 AM
The U.S. Embassy in Colombo has issued a warning to American citizens in Sri Lanka about a possible terrorist attack targeting tourist locations, specifically in Arugam Bay, a popular surfing destination in the southeast of the country. The advisory, based on "credible information," indicates that possible Israeli targets may be affected. In response, Sri Lankan authorities have increased security measures in the area to protect tourists. Following the U.S. warning, Israel's National Security Council has urged its citizens to "immediately leave" certain tourist areas in southern and western Sri Lanka, including Arugam Bay, Ahangama, Galle, Hikkaduwa, and Weligama, due to information indicating a potential terrorist threat focusing on tourist areas and beaches. Israeli tourists have been advised not to reveal their Israeli or Jewish identity and to avoid wearing clothing with Hebrew writing. The advisory came amid reports of a surge in Israeli tourists and the occupation of a building by Israelis in the Arugam Bay area. Sri Lankan police have increased security at popular surf sites and tourist locations frequented by Israelis. The U.K.'s Foreign Office has also updated its travel advice, warning tourists of the sudden onset of the situation and advising them to contact their insurance providers.
