Russia Fires 210 Missiles and Drones at Ukraine's Energy Grid; Air Defenses Down 140 Targets
Nov 17, 2024, 08:10 AM
Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight into Sunday, targeting energy infrastructure across the country. Ukrainian officials reported that approximately 120 missiles and 90 drones, including Shahed kamikaze drones, were launched, aiming at cities including Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Kropyvnytskyi, and Lviv. The attack involved various types of missiles such as Zircons, Iskanders, and Kinzhals and was described as the largest since August. Air raid alerts were issued nationwide ahead of the strikes. Ukraine's air defense forces intercepted and destroyed over 140 air targets, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Despite the defenses, some missiles struck their targets, causing explosions and widespread power outages in several regions. Emergency power outages were implemented in Kyiv, Donetsk, and Dnipropetrovsk regions as authorities responded to the attack. At least two people were killed and six injured, including two children, in Mykolaiv. Ukraine's Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko confirmed that the attacks targeted power generation and transmission facilities.
