Scientists Find COVID-19 Virus Can Linger in Blood and Tissue for Over a Year, Linked to Long COVID
May 28, 2024, 05:07 AM
Scientists have discovered that remnants of the COVID-19 virus can linger in blood and tissue for more than a year after a person is first infected. According to a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, viral RNA was detected in 30% of solid tissue at one month, 27% at two months, and 11% at four months post-infection. Researchers have also shown that SARS-CoV-2 infection can induce changes in skeletal muscle structure and function, which can be worsened by exercise. They recommend avoiding exercise for at least 6-8 weeks after infection. Studies on SARS-CoV-2 persistence have been limited by small and non-representative study populations. Long COVID symptoms are associated with the persistence of the virus in tissues.
