Ukrainian Kamikaze Drones Hit High-Rise Buildings in Kazan, Capital of Tatarstan; Airports Closed
Dec 21, 2024, 07:42 AM
Ukrainian kamikaze drones struck high-rise residential buildings in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan in Russia, early on December 21, causing fires in multiple districts, including the "Azure Skies" and "Manhattan" residential complexes, according to local authorities. The attacks involved eight drones deployed in three waves from different directions. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that three drones were destroyed by air defense systems and three more were suppressed by electronic warfare systems. No casualties have been reported so far. The incidents prompted the temporary closure of Kazan Airport and the airport in the neighboring city of Izhevsk, as announced by Russia's aviation watchdog Rosaviatsia. Emergency services responded to fires in residential buildings in the Sovetsky, Kirovsky, and Privolzhsky districts of Kazan. Residents were evacuated, and authorities are investigating the attacks. Reports suggest that the Kazan Helicopter Plant may have been among the intended targets.
