IRS Makes Free Direct File Program Permanent Nationwide Starting 2025, Thanks to Inflation Reduction Act
May 30, 2024, 06:21 PM
The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the IRS have announced that the Direct File program, a free online tax filing service, will become a permanent option available to all 50 states and Washington D.C. starting in the 2025 tax season. This decision follows a successful pilot program in 12 states that saw over 140,000 Americans use the service, saving $5.6 million in filing fees. The initiative, made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act, aims to simplify the tax filing process, saving taxpayers time and money. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized that President Biden is committed to ensuring families receive the tax benefits they are owed. The expansion of the program comes after a push from Democrats to make it permanent.
