Toyota Faces Scrutiny for Cheating on Certification Tests, Halts Production and Recalls 100,000 Vehicles
Jun 3, 2024, 04:35 PM
Toyota Motor Corp. is facing significant scrutiny and repercussions following revelations of cheating on vehicle certification tests. The automaker has admitted to submitting faulty data during pedestrian and occupant protection tests for seven vehicle models, including high-volume models like the Corolla, Axio, and Yaris. As a result, Toyota has suspended production and sales of three models in Japan. The Japanese transport ministry is conducting an on-site inspection at Toyota's headquarters in Aichi Prefecture, and other Japanese automakers, including Mazda and Yamaha, are also under investigation for similar irregularities. Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda has publicly apologized for the misconduct, expressing regret and acknowledging the severity of the issue. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi has expressed being deeply regretful about the series of irregularities. The recall involves over 100,000 vehicles, including 2022–2023 Toyota Tundras and Lexus LXs, due to potential engine issues caused by machining debris that may lead to potential knocking. This scandal has cast a shadow over Japan's auto industry, raising concerns about the broader implications of certification irregularities.
