Biden's EPA Sets 2032 Deadline for 90% Carbon Cut in Power Plants
Apr 25, 2024, 12:29 PM
The Biden administration has finalized a series of stringent environmental regulations aimed at significantly reducing pollution from the nation's power plants. These new rules, set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), mandate a 90% reduction in carbon emissions from existing coal plants by 2032 and impose strict limits on methane emissions from new gas plants. However, existing gas plants are exempt from these new limits. The regulations also address the reduction of mercury emissions and the management of coal ash and wastewater. These measures are expected to shut down many coal plants unless they can afford costly upgrades, thus accelerating the transition to cleaner energy sources. The EPA issued four new rules and set a 2039 deadline for coal plants to comply or shut down, projecting $370 billion in net benefits.
